Who we are

Roy McCarthy lived locally in Banstead and started as an Engineering Draftsman back in the early 1960's and progressed to owning and running his own Bodyshop and Accident Repair Centre Customstyle Autos from 1968 to 1999 and Ridge Road Repairs in Sutton until 2010.  During his last few years he moved his engineering skills over to his 'hobby' which was preparing race engines, fully modified and standard blue printed and general race preparation - suspension, handling, body preparation and seam welding and all that is necessary to make a club race car.  Skills that he passed on to his son Russell.

Roy started racing in 1970 and had over the years raced MGA, MGB, Austin Healey 3000, Chevron B8, Aston DB4, Jaguar D Type Replica, Tejiero and more recently raced a fully modified MGB GT V8 with great success. Finally having his last race at the reopening of Donington at the Masters meeting on the 4/5th September 2010 when he led the class for 20 of the 25 minute race until he had overheating problems and eased off to come second (http://www.mccarthymotorsport.co.uk/).  He had prepared all the cars over the years building all the engines and had a history of success throughout as his trophy cabinet shows.   Roy sadly lost his battle with cancer on the 7th October 2010.

Russell started his racing career in an MGB Roadster in 1997 which he still races successfully in the MGCC BCV8 Championship and previously in the MGCC Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship.  Russell ventured into a Higher Profile Championship in 2008 joining his brother Spencer and continued into 2009 racing a Ginetta G20 in the Ginetta Seniors Championship and came home 5th overall in both years.   He also raced MGAs and MGBGTV8 and had a great race in the Heritage GT series when he had a second place at Brands Hatch in 2007 only just beaten by ex Touring car driver Andy Rouse by under a second.

In 2011 he was back racing his MGB Roadster.    Since then the business has taken off and has been rewarded by its customers who voted us Garage of the Year in the local Epsom Guardian in 2012, 2013 and 2015.   Russell has continued racing, now the fully modified MGBGTV8 that he built from ground up in 2012 and has been building engines and preparing suspension for several racing customers.  The racing Season is from April to October and we race at Donington, Brands Hatch, Silverstone GP, Oulton Park International, Cadwell Park, Castle Combe and anywhere the racing calendar takes us.  We race at Spa in Belgium in September and in 2016 Russell was outright winner in an hour race of 70 drivers.  In 2017 at Spa he was just about to take the lead when his engine went pop so a bit of work to do over the winter, also in 2017 he raced in a team of three  drivers in the 6 hour relay race taking the last drive in the dark.

Pam McCarthy, Roys Wife and Russells Mum has also helped in all the businesses during the years that they have been running and is there again with Russell helping with office administration and also continuing Coordinating the racing with the MGCC BCV8 Championship (http://www.bcv8.co.uk/) The MGCC Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship started back in 1976 but ceased to exist in 2017 when the 50 year old Sportscars became quite rare but Russell managed to win the Championship in its closing year.  His father won it in its starting year in his MGA so between them they saw it through from start to finish.   (http://www.thorougthbredsportscars.net/) .
